# Breweries in Salzkammergut

Bier drinking in Salzkammergut
------------------------------

In the Salzkammergut region, you will not only find traditional breweries that have been perfecting their craft for centuries, but also many small businesses that are gaining more and more fans with their creative craft beers - both internationally and among locals. A paradise for beer lovers who appreciate the diversity and quality of regional breweries!

With more than 1000 varieties, Austria is one of the world's leading beer nations. In the Salzkammergut region, among many other culinary delights, several small breweries and regional beers are waiting to be discovered and tasted. The common passion for beer connects the small private brewers with each other and produces unique flavors in the process.

Traditional craft and creative beer varieties can be found in the Attersee-Attergau region in no less than four small breweries. In the Fuschlsee region and on Lake Wolfgang, a number of businesses have committed themselves to brewing beer, and Brauhaus Gusswerk has even received international attention. The largest brewery in the Salzkammergut, Brauerei Schloss Eggenberg, can already look back on a long history, and an exciting journey back in time to Bad Ischl's brewing past awaits in the unique Casino Cellar.

### The art of brewing in the Attersee-Attergau region

Behind the different beers from the region are not only different tastes, but above all different private breweries and their brewers, who practice their craft with great passion.

The fifth-generation private brewery in Frankenmarkt, the [Bräu am Berg](https://braeuamberg.at/de/ "Link öffnet sich in neuem Fenster"), works according to the motto "small but mighty": raw materials from local farmers are handcrafted into a multi-award-winning beer and bottled with high-quality Frankenmarkt mineral water. These beer specialties, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law, guarantee beer lovers the highest drinking pleasure. Ecological sustainability and care are always at the forefront.

Inspiration for the brand name of the [Bierschmiede](https://attersee-attergau.salzkammergut.at/aktivitaeten/genuss/genussherbst-2022/bierbrauer/oesterreich-gastronomie/detail/430005509/bierschmiede-braustub-n.html "Link öffnet sich in neuem Fenster") was the grandfather of Mario Scheckenberger, the beer smith, he was once a blacksmith in Steinbach. In addition to the award-winning beers, the brewery tours, beery souvenirs, and the Braustubn including regional delicacies are very popular.

In the case of Werkstück, the beer for the Attersee-Traunsee Nature Park, an enjoyable selection of pale Pilsner malt and selected caramel malts results in a rich amber color. The most important raw material for this - the water - comes directly from the source in the Attersee Traunsee Nature Park.

Volkher Kaltenböck runs the [Kaltenböck Brewery](https://attersee-attergau.salzkammergut.at/aktivitaeten/genuss/genussherbst-2022/bierbrauer/oesterreich-poi/detail/430010698/brauerei-kaltenboeck.html "Link öffnet sich in neuem Fenster") in Attersee together with his brother Herwig. Their beers have won several awards and since 2012 they have even grown their own barley and hops in their own fields. The Pfahlbaubier is a very special beer, which is also the harbinger for the 2027 state exhibition. It is a dark herbal beer with raw materials that were already cultivated in the Neolithic Age.

For almost 200 years, you can find hospitality in the Wirtshaus [Zum Gugg](https://attersee-attergau.salzkammergut.at/aktivitaeten/genuss/genussherbst-2022/bierbrauer/oesterreich-gastronomie/detail/100378/brauhaus-zum-gugg.html "Link öffnet sich in neuem Fenster") in the heart of Gampern. Since 2017, beer has also been brewed there. In the new brewhouse, the Gugg beers are brewed in a very special ambience. Beer lovers can choose between Gugg (naturally cloudy Märzen), Gamperner Spezial (dark) or one or the other seasonal beer specialty - a piece of down-to-earth brewing art with regional ingredients.

### Bier from the Bad Ischler Bierkeller

You can take a special journey through time in Bad Ischl's oldest beer cellar at the [Casino Keller](https://www.cafe-casino.at/ "Link öffnet sich in neuem Fenster"). The cellars in Bad Ischl, which vary greatly in size, are a valuable part of the town's cultural history. The Casino Keller was owned by the Ischl Brewery until 1908, the house is known as "Cafe Casino" and came into the possession of the Schmalnauer family in 1971. The so-called "Grieblkeller" is a more than 500 year old natural cellar with a total area of 380 m². Carved out of sandstone conglomerate by hand, the cellar served as a large refrigerator for the citizens of Bad Ischl and especially for the "Alt Ischlerbräu", as the cellar temperature is a constant 12 °C in summer and winter. The remarkable medieval structure of the vault is still mostly original. Even today, traces of the cellar's excavation are still clearly visible. During the cellar tours, the history and geology of the cellar is told in an entertaining way. Afterwards, home-brewed beer specialties can be tasted in the historic brewery.

### In the Fuschlseeregion...

... two small, fine breweries are waiting for all beer lovers.

The [Bramsau Bräu](https://www.bramsau-braeu.at/ "Link öffnet sich in neuem Fenster") in Faistenau uses only the best raw materials to produce the naturally cloudy beer. Brewing is done with Mühlviertel hops and Faistenau spring water, which also provides for the excellent taste of the beer. In addition to excellent food, the following beers are served and brewed in the Bramsau Bräu restaurant: the Faistenauer Gerstl - a naturally cloudy Märzen beer and, depending on the season, various beer specialties - also naturally cloudy: the Bockbier, Herbstbier, Jedermannbier, Schwarzbier, or Sommerbier.

The Austrian organic brewery [Brauhaus Gusswerk](https://www.brauhaus-gusswerk.at/brauerei/ "Link öffnet sich in neuem Fenster") is located in Hof near Salzburg. Under brewmaster Reini Barta, Gusswerk has already won numerous awards and produced some World Winning Beers.

The goal of the passionate brewmaster is to make sustainably and biodynamically produced beer respectable in Austria.

In addition to numerous organic beers that you can taste on site and also buy in larger quantities, he also offers numerous organic lemonades that you can drink with exquisite delicacies in the Genusswerk restaurant. From the organic light Edelguss to dark beers like the "Horny Betty", there is something for every taste - with or without alcohol.

### Das Bier zum Salzkammergut

The Schloss [Eggenberg brewery](https://traunsee-almtal.salzkammergut.at/oesterreich-poi/detail/430003946/brauerei-schloss-eggenberg-das-bier-zum-salzkammergut-bierdepot.html "Link öffnet sich in neuem Fenster") - a private brewery since 1681 and independent and autonomous for eight generations of the family. To preserve something like this requires openness to new things. As the beer to the Salzkammergut, the brewery in the Traunsee-Almtal region defies the standard beers with its regional character. Currently, 15 different types of beer are produced, ranging from typical Austrian classics to unusual specialty beers, also called "craft beer".

The history of Schloss Eggenberg in Vorchdorf goes back a long time and has been one thing above all: changeable. However, the castle has remained intact over the centuries and so has the Eggenberg beer.

The lakes in the immediate vicinity are of drinking water quality, the mountains are imposing,

the air is clear and pure. This freshness of the region is also in the nature of the brewmasters. But freshness is also an attitude and a value that is always held high in Eggenberg: With high quality, local raw materials, beers with strong character and regional responsibility, freshness and independence are preserved. At the Schloss Eggenberg brewery, beer is brewed with joy, fun, and passion!

### Beer specialties from lake Wolfgang

[Strobler Bier](https://wolfgangsee.salzkammergut.at/magazin/strobler-bier.html "Link öffnet sich in neuem Fenster") - the small private brewery at Lake Wolfgang was founded in 2016. The friends Johann Wieser, Gerhard Prammer and Michael Sams bought a small home brewing equipment and after a few promising attempts decided to let the idea of brewing beer grow and expand. The first brew was brewed in October 2016, and the "Strobler Helle" was presented to the locals in early 2017. Today, the Strobler Helle is brewed as standard and a Strobler Weizen and seasonal specialties such as the Strobler Adventbier and the Strobler Maibier are also waiting for all beer lovers. The Strobler beers can be tasted at regional gastronomic establishments, and the brewers also run their own inn in Strobl. In "dasWirtshaus" the Strobler Helle on tap and various special beers from the bottle are waiting.
